When I hear the word victim I shutter. This word cuts through me like no other. I am not a victim! I look down at my hands. I see them. I can hear myself breathing. My heart is beating. I AM ALIVE. I survived this horrible experience.
I believe there are three distinct stages of the healing process; victim, survivor, and thriver. At the time of the assault I was a victim. This happened to me. It was not my choosing. Then, I became a survivor. I spent each day fighting to survive. Fighting to feel myself breath. Fighting to see hands through my own eyes. Then, I became a Thriver. I am no longer fighting to survive. I am thriving. I have chosen to take this horrible experience and do something good with it. I have chosen to be the voice for those that have not found their own. To create change. To empower others. I am change and I will not be stopped. I am Thriving and I love this about myself.
When something terrible happens you can choose one of three paths; you can stay a victim and let it destroy you, become a survivor and let it define you, or become a thriver and let it strengthen you. –M.Crosby
